How to play Double Agent
Every day brings one puzzle made of five rounds. In each round you see five words. Four of them follow a hidden rule. One looks like it belongs but breaks the rule. That one is the double agent. Tap it before the clock runs out.
An example round
The hidden rule: each word reads the same backward. BANANA backward is ANANAB, so it’s the double agent.
Most rounds use everyday knowledge instead of letter tricks. For example: four of the words are farm animals and one is a lion, or four are rivers and one is a desert. After every round the rule is revealed, so you can see exactly why the answer was right.
The five rounds
The rounds get harder through the day. Harder rounds give you more time, but they are also worth much more, so a fast solve on a hard round scores big.
| # | Level | Time | Max | Min |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rookie | 20s | 100 | 10 |
| 2 | Field agent | 25s | 200 | 20 |
| 3 | Handler | 30s | 350 | 35 |
| 4 | Operative | 40s | 550 | 55 |
| 5 | Spymaster | 50s | 800 | 80 |
Time is how long you get. Max is the score for an instant answer, and your points drain steadily as the clock runs down toward Min. You can watch the points still on the table in the bar at the top of the screen.
Wrong guesses and penalties
- One wrong guess is free. That word is crossed out and the clock keeps running.
- A second wrong guess forfeits the round. You lose 50 points and move on.
- Running out of time also costs 50 points.
- Your total never drops below 0.
The most you can score in one day is 2,000 points.
Your result
When you finish, you can copy a result that shows one square per round without giving away the answers:
- 🟩 solved with no wrong guess
- 🟨 solved after one wrong guess
- 🟥 forfeited after two wrong guesses
- ⬛ ran out of time
Leaderboard and accounts
You can play without an account. To post your score, sign in or create a free account with the Sign in button at the top right of the game. You can post one score per day. The daily puzzle changes at midnight US Eastern time, and everyone gets the same puzzle. The practice puzzle at the end of a run doesn’t count toward the leaderboard.
Tips
- Read all five words before you tap. The double agent is built to look right at a glance.
- Ask what the four have in common, not what one of them is.
- Spot the rule early and the clock matters less, because the points drain slowly at first.
- On a keyboard, the keys 1 to 5 pick the words from left to right, top to bottom.
- Close the page and come back later? Your clock keeps running while you’re away.
