How to play Overflap
Every day brings one puzzle made of five rounds. In each round, two flocks of birds circle the city. Each flock is a category, like Fruit and Red. Your job is to name things that belong to both categories. Each answer that fits becomes a bird in the overlap between the two flocks.
An example round
Strawberry, cherry, apple and tomato all fit both. You type an answer, press Release, and if it fits, a bird joins the overlap.
You can place up to 3 birds each round. Typos are fine, and close enough counts: “synth” will be understood as “synthesizer”.
Rarer answers fly you higher
Every bird you place adds meters to your altitude. The more unusual the answer, the bigger the bird and the higher you climb:
| Bird | Meters |
|---|---|
| Pigeon | +10 m |
| Sparrow | +25 m |
| Bluebird | +45 m |
| Kingfisher | +70 m |
| Phoenix | +120 m |
Common answers are pigeons. A deep cut that few people think of can be a phoenix. At the end of each round you see the round’s Phoenix answer and a few other deep cuts.
The feather clock
Each round has a time limit shown by a falling feather. Rounds get harder through the day.
- Time per round: 50, 50, 45, 45 and 40 seconds.
- A wrong answer (a real thing that doesn’t fit both flocks) knocks 3 seconds off the clock.
- A word we don’t know costs 1 second.
- Hint: each round has one free hint that shows the shape of a good answer.
- Land early: ends the round now and keeps the birds you’ve already placed.
Think we missed a good answer? After a word we don’t know, you can tap the Should “…” count? button that appears to send it to us for review.
Your result
When you finish all five rounds you get your total altitude, a rare-bird summary, and a percentile showing how your flight compares with everyone who played that day. You can copy a short result to share without giving away any answers.
Leaderboard and accounts
You can play without an account, and your score still counts toward the daily percentile. To appear on the leaderboard, sign in or create a free Figure Fruit account. The same account works in every Figure Fruit game. The daily puzzle changes at midnight US Eastern time, and everyone gets the same puzzle.
Tips
- Start by listing what belongs to each flock on its own, then look for the overlap.
- Fill all three perches, even with common answers. Three pigeons beat none.
- Try unusual things. Rare answers are worth much more.
- Use your hint when you’re stuck, not at the start.
